New STK Components Release includes Volumetrics and 3D Coverage Analysis

In 2016, AGI introduced Volumetric analysis to our desktop product, Systems Tool Kit (STK). This feature set enabled the analyst to perform coverage calculations in three dimensions, as well as define custom geometric objects, such as vectors, points, angles, and planes for use in the coverage system. For those unfamiliar with the analytical domain of Volumetric analysis it can be applied to a diverse body of problems, including launch window analysis, space surveillance, space environment and orbital design, aircraft body masking, RF analysis, and RF jamming.

Today, we’d like to announce the addition of Volumetrics to our API product, STK Components. As of the 2018r3 release, STK Components includes changes to the coverage system to allow for the use of arbitrary spatial dimensions.

In addition to the architectural changes to the coverage system, this release includes these new geometric primitive grid types:

  • Cuboid
  • Spheroid
  • Cone
  • Torus
  • Rectangular pyramid
  • Cylinder

Each of these new grid types may be easily altered to produce derivative geometries usable in both analysis and visualization. The cuboid grid, for example, may be manipulated to produce a plane grid, or the spheroid grid may be altered to produce a hemispherical grid. Each of these new grid types may be attached and oriented relative to any reference frame, including moving frames attached to vehicles.

Also included is a new coverage grid that can extrude any of the two dimensional ellipsoid surface grids to three dimensions. Despite the rich capabilities a feature like this offers, its use is relatively simple- one merely configures a 2D coverage grid, say for example, a global grid with 5 degree latitude and longitude resolution, and then inputs this grid in to the extruder. From there it is simple to specify the manner in which the height is gridded. Many options are possible, such as gridding every 100 meters or gridding 10 points from the surface to 20 km.

An important feature of any API is consistency and usability. Thus, despite the addition of higher spatial dimensions to our coverage system, its setup varies trivially between 1D, 2D, and 3D grids. In order to use any coverage definition one merely selects the type of grid to be used to approximate the region of interest and goes!
